FK2

'Turbocharged Evolution'

2015–2017

Launched in 1997, the EK9 was Honda’s first Civic to wear the Type R badge. Built exclusively for Japan, it combined a lightweight chassis with a 1.6L VTEC engine that screamed to 8,000 rpm. It set the foundation for every Type R that followed.

Performance highlights

The FK2 made history as the first turbocharged Civic Type R, pushing front-wheel-drive performance into supercar territory. Developed and built in the UK, it featured advanced aerodynamics, adaptive dampers, and a new dual-axis front suspension designed to virtually eliminate torque steer. In 2015, the FK2 shattered expectations by setting a record lap at the Nürburgring Nordschleife with a time of 7:50.63, making it the fastest front-wheel-drive car in the world at the time. This achievement wasn’t just marketing — it was proof of Honda’s relentless engineering focus. The car’s aggressive styling, massive rear wing, and precise handling made it instantly iconic. Though its production run was short, the FK2 reestablished the Type R as a global performance benchmark and set the stage for the even more refined FK8.
