FN2
'The Everyday Racer'
2007–2011
Launched in 1997, the EK9 was Honda’s first Civic to wear the Type R badge. Built exclusively for Japan, it combined a lightweight chassis with a 1.6L VTEC engine that screamed to 8,000 rpm. It set the foundation for every Type R that followed.

Performance highlights
While it faced criticism for moving away from the EK9 and EP3’s fully independent suspension, the FN2 earned respect in real-world conditions. Its rigid chassis and precise steering made it quick and stable on twisty roads — a true driver’s car for the street. On the track, the FN2 proved itself in national one-make series like the Civic Cup UK, where privateer teams pushed the hatch to its limits. Honda also developed special versions such as the Mugen FN2, featuring upgraded suspension, aerodynamics, and a hand-built 240 hp engine — keeping the Type R spirit alive for hardcore enthusiasts. The FN2 may not have been the purist’s favorite, but it marked an important chapter: showing that the Type R could blend performance with design, comfort, and a bit of everyday practicality — without losing its soul.
